Finishing
A Wipe-On Finish That’s Hard to Mess Up
Table of Contents
Demo content — Kerfline & Co. is a fictional woodshop. This site is a demo of the KeoCodes Site Engine: the maker, plans, prices, reviews and town stand in for a real shop's, checkout charges nothing, and nothing sent from here reaches anybody.
Brushing varnish takes practice. Wiping it doesn't.
The mix
Equal parts oil-based polyurethane and mineral spirits in a jar. Shake it.
The method
- Sand to 180 grit and wipe off the dust.
- Wipe a wet coat on with a folded lint-free cloth.
- Wait five minutes, then wipe off everything that hasn't soaked in.
- Let it dry overnight. Scuff lightly with a gray pad, then do it again.
Three coats for a shelf or a box. Five for a tabletop.
Rags
Oil-soaked rags can catch fire on their own as they dry. Lay them flat outside to dry, or keep them in a sealed metal can of water.
